The short answer
Flights between England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man need no health paperwork for dogs and cats, and no approved route to come back. The catches are the foreign-port rule on private flights, minimum ages and some breed rules.
If you are flying within the UK and its islands, you can leave most of the paperwork worries behind. That is why a short domestic charter is the simplest pet flight there is.
What the rules say
- Jersey: no official health requirements for dogs, cats or ferrets travelling between Jersey and the UK, Isle of Man or other Channel Islands. The minimum age to fly is 8 weeks
- Guernsey: no official requirements for pets travelling with their owners between the Bailiwick and the UK or other Crown Dependencies
- Isle of Man: free movement of most dogs, cats and ferrets from Great Britain with no animal health requirements
- Coming back to Great Britain: no pet passport, health certificate or approved route is needed from these places
The catches
- The foreign-port rule: on a private plane or boat to Jersey or Guernsey you must not land at a foreign port on the way (Northern Ireland and Ireland excepted for Guernsey)
- Pets from abroad: a pet that originated abroad must have landed legally in the UK first, and pets from the EU cannot land directly in the Isle of Man by private air transport
- Breeds: XL Bully-type dogs need a licence for Jersey, and the Isle of Man prohibits several breeds
- Licences: dogs living in Jersey aged 6 months or over must be licensed by the parish
