The short answer
Usually not. Many vets advise against sedating pets for flying, because sedation can affect breathing, balance and body temperature. Talk to your vet. A calm owner, a familiar blanket and a quiet cabin usually do more than medication.
Sedatives can lower a dog's blood pressure and slow breathing, and an unsteady, drowsy dog is harder to settle safely. That is why vets are cautious, especially with flat-faced breeds and older dogs.
What helps instead
- Practise with the carrier or harness for several weeks beforehand
- Take your dog for a good walk before you arrive at the airfield
- Bring a familiar blanket or a worn T-shirt
- Stay calm yourself: dogs read their owners
- Ask your vet about calming products designed for travel
If your vet does prescribe something for a particularly anxious dog, follow their advice exactly and tell the charter team beforehand. We can adjust the timing and the aircraft. See flying with your dog.
